We are pleased to announce that the Unitarian Congregation of West Chester is joining with other Unitarian Universalist congregations in the Delaware Valley and across the nation in supporting the Black Lives Matter movement, its call for racial justice, and its affirmation of the value of black lives across society.
A resolution to support the movement was passed by the Congregation in March.

Displaying the Banner

As part of the resolution, we are publicly stating our support by hanging a “Black Lives Matter” banner on our building at 501 S. High Street in West Chester. Additionally, and on a continuing basis, our membership is exploring how we
can better understand the black experience in our community, and how we can best speak out against injustice and discrimination.

Discussion and Inspiration

We regard the tendency to devalue black lives as an issue that permeates all areas of society at different times and in different ways. Our exploration of the issue will reflect that.

Passing the resolution on the issue followed several weeks of discussion prior to our Congregational meeting and vote. We were inspired in part by a document passed In Portland, OR, last June at the Annual General Assembly of the Unitarian Universalist Association, comprised of UU congregations across the United States. That document called upon congregations to support the BLM Movement and to take initiative in collaboration with local and national organizations in fighting for racial justic

Additionally, our resolution is in keeping with Unitarian Universalist principles, which affirm “the inherent worth and dignity of every person,” call for “justice, equity and compassion in human relations,” and pursue the goal “of world community with peace, liberty and justice for all.
