The Good Place
The aim of this course is to encourage students in the exploration of their morals and values. How did they form their beliefs? How do their beliefs stand up to the test of real-world situations? When asked to defend their beliefs, what will they say? Using the backdrop of the NBC show, The Good Place, the instructors of the course will engage the students in discussion through guiding questions that form from the episode(s) of the show for that class session. Together, instructors and students will examine such questions as: Do we need the idea of hell in order to lead a moral life? If we experience consequences for our actions on Earth, what would it mean to experience consequences again in the afterlife? Does committing a lesser wrong in order to prevent greater wrong violate your value system? Is the value and worth of a person inherent, or does it change in comparison to other people?
